Virginia has currently lost four of their last five games. The 2018-19 team lost only three games the entire season. The last time UVA had a losing streak at this level is back in the 2016-17 season. That team lost four games in a row with a total of 11 games lost in the season. The four games in a row came in February, and I am sure that year we were wondering if that team would make it to the NCAA Tournament. Well they did, as a four seed. That is why there is still hope for this team. A couple things to be encouraged by…..
Best Defense in the Country
Virginia always has a good defense and you can make a case virtually every year that it’s the best in the country. The same is to be said this year, the Hoos are only allowing 49.7 points per game, an insane stat. Last year, UVA had the number one scoring defense and allowed 56.1 points per game. We almost give up seven points a game less than last year’s team and we were ranked number one in that year as well.
Our defense has kept us in every game, except the Purdue game. During this poor five game stretch the Hoos are in, we have led late in the second half and we were unable to finish the game off with a win.
Huff & Morsell
Kihei Clark, Braxton Key, and Mamadi Diakite have been consistent pretty much all year. Each one of those guys are solid players an coming into the year you thought Jay Huff might even be UVA’s leading scorer at this point. Well, Huff has been kind of disappointing until late. Jay Huff is averaging 9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game, but since the Syracuse game he has really improved. In the last four games his averages are 10.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game. That includes a career high of 17 points against Georgia Tech.
GIVE ME THIS HUFF……
Casey Morsell was a highly rated recruit, I did not expect him to be a one and done, but I thought he would shoot better than 15.4% from three and score double figures more than twice in the his first 18 games. He has shown flashes though, like scoring 19 against Arizona State and the nine points he scored against NC State on Monday. I am really high on Morsell he has the “IT” factor, in that he wants to take the big shot. He is going to have a good career as a UVA player, I expect him to start contributing more.
Morsell can make threes……
No clear fourth best team in the ACC
Our schedule shapes up well the rest of the way and that starts this Sunday against Wake Forest. If we beat Wake, we come home against a top 10 Florida State team, that we should have beat in Tallahassee. After that, we face Clemson on February 5th, in Charlottesville. We need to take it one at a time, but I could see us rolling three straight wins, before heading to Louisville on February 8th. After Louisville, there is not a game the rest of the way where we would be heavy under dogs.
Let’s do this!
