Virginia enters Tuesday’s game against Notre Dame at 15-5 overall and 7-5 in the ACC, which has them tied for 4th in the conference. The effort the Cavs gave last time out was arguably its best of the season. On Saturday, against the best team in the ACC, Virginia fought to the wire. UVA scored a season high 73 points, thanks in large part to the 27 points Tomas Woldetensae contributed.
Tony Bennett said this after the game Saturday, “There’s still things that we can improve but you saw a great environment for college basketball. We took a step in defeat. I can handle being beat. I just don’t like losing, and we didn’t lose today.”
Virginia’s next opponent on Tuesday will not be an easy one. The Cavs will welcome Notre Dame to the JPJ. Notre Dame is right on Virginia’s heels in the ACC standings at 6-6.
The Fighting Irish are led by John Mooney, who is a favorite to be on the first team All-ACC team. Mooney is a walking double-double. He averages 16.5 points and 13.0 rebounds per game. Mooney is second in the nation with 19 double-doubles in the 22 games he has played this year. Which is 86.6% of the games he has played in he has a double-double. If that continues it would break an NCAA record for the highest percent of double-doubles.
Virginia really needs to win this game on Tuesday, to help its NCAA Tournament hopes. Also, if the Hoos want to finish in the top 4 of the ACC and receive the double bye this is almost a must win.
The game will tip at 9EST on ESPN2.
